Why did I receive a new 1042-S form for tax year 2025?

  • Updated

Sovos identified a printing problem that affected some recipient copies of Form 1042-S for tax year 2025. Find out what happened and whether you need to take any action.

What happened?

Sovos identified two separate problems affecting 1042-S forms printed and mailed through the print and mail service.

First, status code information was mapped incorrectly on some recipient copies. Data from box 12b (Withholding Agent Ch. 3 Status Code) printed in box 13f (Recipient Ch. 3 Status Code), and data from box 12c (Withholding Agent Ch. 4 Status Code) printed in box 13g (Recipient Ch. 4 Status Code).

Second, a truncation problem in boxes 5 and 6 (Withholding Allowance and Net Income) caused the last digit of printed values to be dropped.

When Sovos identified the problem, printing was paused and the form template was corrected.

What was affected?

  • Recipient copies of Form 1042-S printed and mailed through the print and mail service
  • Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 status code fields (boxes 12b, 12c, 13f, and 13g)
  • Boxes 5 and 6, where the last digit of printed values was dropped

Why did I receive a new form?

You received a new Form 1042-S because your originally printed recipient copy may have contained incorrect information. Sovos reissued recipient copies so your form reflects the accurate form information and matches what was filed with the IRS.

What changed on the reissued form?

The reissued form corrects the status codes in boxes 12b, 12c, 13f, and 13g. The truncation problem affecting boxes 5 and 6 has also been corrected, so the last digit of those values now prints correctly. No other information on the form was changed.

Do I need to take any action?

For most recipients, no action is required. Keep the most recent version of the form for your records.

If you used the original form to prepare your tax return, share the reissued copy with your tax preparer so they can advise whether any follow-up is needed.

Was the IRS filing affected?

No. This problem only affected how certain fields appeared on the printed recipient copy. The information filed with the IRS was not affected.

Will I be charged for the reissued form?

No. Reissued recipient copies are provided at no charge.
